Silky

When we were in Arizona last month, our herpetologist friend Roger (one of the stars of the book Katie of the Sonoran Desert) and his lovely wife Dianna took us out for a great Mexican dinner. We had a lovely time and Dianna surprised me with a gift:

Hand-dyed silk, waiting to be spun! What a thoughtful thing to give me. Dianna has read my blog and knows that I knit, and in fact I also want to learn to spin. So I am looking forward to spinning this silk myself at some point. I don't know a whole lot about spinning, but my neighbour at the farm kitty-corner to ours is a member of the local spinning and weaving guild and owns a spinning wheel. At some point, I am hoping for a lesson! Maybe I can use a drop-spindle for this.

I just love the colours! Some of my very favourite shades.

Right now I have too much to do and not enough time, and it's driving me crazy. I am trying to prioritize things in my life and figure out how to do more of the things I love doing, and less of the crap I hate doing. I have been wanting to learn to spin for years and have had trouble finding the time, so I'm keeping this silk in plain view to remind me that I need to get my priorities sorted out.

I am not enchanted by the weather forecast either. Six days of rain, starting tomorrow? My only consolation is that Environment Canada is always getting forecasts wrong!

  2. The silk is beautiful and I know, when you have the time that you will create something stunning with it.

Hope you are able to get all that *stuff* out of the way so you can start doing what it is you love.

  3. Honey, eggs, catnip....we really do have to take a drive up your way this summer and meet. Now that Gordon's going to be working from home this might be possible. Let's do it.

  4. That's the kind of project that keeps me going. It really is so much fun to devote your energy to doing something you've never done before and for me, the planning phase of the whole thing, whether it be building model airplanes or taking a ceramics class, is the most fun of all.

You've set yourself up for a most challenging endeavour, and I for one would love it if you put your minty-fresh silk thingies up for sale! I'd be the first in line! Are you going to do custom orders? =+)

Deb, I would love to meet up this summer. We should do it after the honey harvest so I can give you a jar! And eggs! And catnip!

  15. PS: Deb, the gecko is doing very well! We've got more humidity in her tank to help her deal with the shedding issues. Let's hope she lives another ten years.
