Spring in November

The weather is nuts here. We almost set a record today with the temperature pushing 17C/63F. Utterly bizarre!  But the animals love it...

I took the dogs for a walk and Sophie had a satisfying roll in the grass afterwards.

This is abnormal. Bees should be inside clustering at this time of year, not hatching new babies and flying around outside the hive like crazy people.  I just wrapped the hives on the weekend.

Also utterly bizarre: dandelions blooming in mid-November. This is wrong, wrong, wrong...

In the woodlot, a new little maple tree at the edge of the white pine and white spruce plantation.

Still some leaves hanging on here and there.

The soybeans are still on the fields too. Usually they are harvested by October. It has been a really weird year.

Tristan is happy!

Roll, roll, roll...

  1. It's very strange indeed, I've seen a couple of trees with buds on. What worries me is if they are killed off by frost, will any more come in Spring?
How are the baby bees going to fare if it changes suddenly?

I love Tristan's face in the photos.

  6. LBM, I talked to a local beekeeper yesterday and he said the bees would be okay. The bees all cluster inside when it's cold, but they just shouldn't be wasting food resources (honey and pollen) increasing hive numbers at this time of year. It's a bit worrisome; they have got to be confused!

  7. Jams, I really find it all very disturbing, as much as the weather is lovely. As you may have guessed, I am NOT a climate change denier!

The doggy photos made me smile.

Weather is weird here too. I recently got into a debate with some climate change deniers on a local news website. The mental gymnastics they engage in are mind-boggling. On a related note, WHY THE HELL DO I TRY TO REASON WITH THESE PEOPLE? Sigh.

  11. I hate cold and snow, so I'm not complaining. Bring back the dandelions for all! Free the bees! Free grass rolls while the grass is still there! Don't ever harvest the soybeans! Yeahhhhhh!!!!!! Autumn forever rules!!!!

Oh, (cough nervously) ...Got a little excited there...

  13. Lynn, they harvested the soybeans this weekend. SOrry about that! :) But the bees were going nuts today. I put out a bunch of hives with (extracted) frames, to freeze wax moth larvae to death (You leave them out a couple of nights.) At this time of year, the bees are supposed to be mostly tucked up into their hives. But today it went from freezing when I got up to over 60F, and the honeybees found the hives I put out and were going NUTS over the honey remnants. They can find their way into the boxes through the tiniest crack.
