Just ducky!

We are really enjoying our Muscovy ducks (which is good, since in about ten days there will be 15 more  if Eugenia does a good job of hatching out her eggs!)

Our friend Eugene (after whom Eugenia is named) said to us that chickens are like cats and ducks are like dogs! I think this is an apt comparison. I didn't realize that there was such a difference; they are all, after all, birds! But Eugene's right -- ducks do what you want them to, while chickens are all over the place and have minds of their own!

Here's Charlie Sheen, giving himself a good preening:

Much more handsome and refined than the human version!

The lovely Ronna (yes, named after our friend Ronna) makes herself pretty for the boys.

Sweetie!

MacGregor, named after my mother-in-laws' clan, is top drake and is inclined to pick on poor Charlie Sheen.

He gets his way with the ladies, which probably explains why Charlie Sheen (the drake, not the actor) gets his way with my arm. Or leg.

Stay tuned for ducklings! Eugenia is getting more and more protective, leaping off her nest and attacking my feet when I go in the duckhouse. We try not to disturb her too much, but sometimes we have to go in there to attend to chores.

If anyone's got any Muscovy-raising tips, feel free to share!

  1. You ask for Muscovy-raising tips. It seems like, with Charlie Sheen, all you would need to do is lift your leg!

  3. I love ducks but find their agression when mating difficult to bare!

  4. Evlyn, he makes it easy to raise ducks! ;)

Barbarapc, I have a suspicion they will be painfully cute.

Maybe Charlie would enjoy a blow-up duck?

  6. Hahahaha! I have no doubt! Where does one purchase such a duck? Rubber chickens are easy to find, but blow-up ducks? How about a decoy from a hunting store?
