Here's the scoop

Kitten went to the vet for a check-up and deworming last night. Here's the scoop...

It's a GIRL!

She is 8 weeks old and weighs 1.12 kg or 2.46 lbs.

She is too healthy to be a feral cat or stray. Somebody dumped her, in the frigid winter. It's a miracle she survived the  -20C (-4F) and LOWER temps we had earlier this week. She was one smart kitty to find our granary and start making a lot of noise. Words can't express my disgust for someone who would dump a kitten like this. We do have animal shelters in this country, if you really need to get rid of a cat.

The vet told me to look for other kittens in case they were all dumped here but I haven't seen any yet. We are about 1 km from the nearest house and well back from the road. Still, I will keep checking.

I am in love. So is Gordon! She is living in our spare bedroom for now.

This is all awfully reminiscent of how Naomi showed up in 2008, although she at least came in warmer September weather.

We are calling her Emily!

More photos soon.

  1. I never understand how someone can dump an animal. Horrible.
    Very lucky kitty!

  4. That is one lucky little kitten! I love the first picture of you and Emily, you both look lovely.

I am biting my tongue, so that I won't get on my soapbox (about the way some people treat animals) I'm sure we all feel the same.

    Grrrr.

    Emily got lucky.

Just a thought though - you sure no neighbour has lost a kitten Christmas present?

Our kitten cat wandered a long way away a few days after we got her (and a word of warning - our vet told us it was a him, but when we later went to get him neutered the vet discovered it was a her).

  7. I'm so glad she's healthy, safe, and warm in a loving home now. I love her name, too! It fits her. ("Emily" is the name I chose for the heroine in my first book. Lol! I've always liked that name).

I agree with Andrew also, that it'd probably be a good idea to ask around about a missing kitten, put out posters, etc. Just to be safe.

  8. Dickinson or Brontë? Carr? Obviously you were a few weeks off Emily of New Moon.

  9. Freshisle, me neither!

Pilgrim, we are so happy to have her.

Wandering Cat, I'm sure it's easier to sex a cat in person. :)

Elaine, the joys of Mac PhotoBooth. SNooze and cuddle with your kitten, take photos at the same time!

  10. Kristin and Andrew, it's good thought but we live on an 86-acre farm surrounding by farms of similar size. I know all the neighbours within 5 km and would know if they'd lost a kitten. Plus kitty would have to cross acres and acres of frozen fields just to get to our place. :( And no kitten of that age should be outside here in January, period. So I'm not too worried she's lost. It was in the -20s when we found her and she wouldn't have lasted long wandering around. If we lived closer to town, I'd put up an ad. :)

  11. HWB, EMily of Half Moon perhaps?

  12. Oh, and stray dogs are another story! I've reunited a lost beagle with its owner after it showed at our farm, and we have a bit of a dog rescue network on our road! But a dog can wander a lot farther than a tiny kitten in winter.

  13. Love Emily's black markings. Hi, Em! Kiss-kiss.

  14. Okay, 86 acres makes it completely different. Lol! I figured since she was healthy, it's plausible she got out of someone's house by mistake but since you don't have many neighbors and know them all I guess the poor thing was dumped. That's so horrible. At least she has a happy future now. It's a miracle she survived weather like that in the first place.

Emily reminds me of my Wendy Kitty when she was a baby... and before she turned towards the dark side. :p

Beautiful pics of you two. I'm expecting great things from Emily. And lots of blog posts with photos! She has such a sweet little face. This post melted my heart.

  16. Yeah Emily! I love that name!

That is so awful that someone would leave a kitten to freeze, leave it to suffer a slow and miserable death. I don't get people. And she's healthy and cute and a baby, too. She could have been dropped at a shelter where someone would have loved a Christmas kitty. Bad, evil person. Poor Emily, if only she could talk!

But now you are Gordon are blessed! It was meant to be! Yeah!! How do the other cats like her so far?

I just brought in cat #3 inside. At first #2 didn't like #3, but now they are all BFFs. #3 is a teenager and is so full of spunk and plays 24/7. He wears the other 2 out! And they are only about 3 years old themselves!

Congrats on the new baby girl!

  17. Unfortunately, animal dumps are all too common. Our little Blotch probably was one since she was only about 4 weeks old when we found her up a tree on our property. Too young to voluntarily leave her mom. She's a lovely little cat and will turn 12 soon. I'm sure you won't regret your adoption. Maybe we could dump some people in the backwoods.

  18. You know, you never "get" a cat. Cats get you.

  19. Emily is beautiful and very lucky she found her way to you.
We had a cat that appeared to be a stray or feral hanging around here throughout the holidays. It was hunting and eating the rabbits on our property. I called the closest animal welfare society and they told me that they did not have a contract to pick up cats in our township. So, I called our township and they said that they are only equipped to pick up stray dogs. Over the holidays, our son and his family came to visit and decided to take the cat. It's been to their vet and checked over, de-wormed, de-fleaed and given it's shots. They are going to have it neutered as well. I'm just happy that the cat, now named Hippo has found a good home as we could not adopt it. There is a farm house near us and apparently people are often dropping off their litters on the road to it...it disgusts me that there are so many irresponsible pet owners
