A moment with chickens

Sorry, friends, I have gotten behind on blog posting and blog reading the past couple of days! I will catch up soon, plus I will draw the name for the giveaway I held last  month, and let you know who won and what they got! :)

Meanwhile, I bring you Errol Flynn and his muff girlfriend...

I left this box on a couple of bales of straw, and these two were hanging out in it for quite a while. And if you look carefully, you can see that Miss Muff laid an egg in there! It's just peaking our from under her. Errol was taking good care of his woman and their unborn child. Which became an egg salad sandwich. Oops.

The other muff, Emma, keeps disappearing somewhere in the barn. The last time that happened, she showed up one day with eleven chicks!! We need to track her down, but she's very wily. She'll show up for a little while, then vanish into thin air. It's beyond me why she'd go broody at this time of year, but the weather is so screwed up (it was almost 18C/65F yesterday) that it's possible she's confused. Or just not such a hot mother, planning children for winter!

My honey bees were out flying around yesterday. In December. Do you know how weird that is?!

More posts soon and I promise to get a name picked in the giveaway!

  1. These warm temps are confusing the animals and the weathermen!

  3. I wouldn't mind some unusually warm weather here--we're wet!! My blogging days are lean too, but I just finished a big chunk of work I had to do that gets shipped off tomorrow and I'm breathing again:-D Love seeing your chicks, XOXO

  4. When our hens were truly 'free range' we had a huge ancient stone barn, where they roosted at night. We often found hens appearing with a dozen chicks in tow. It was like magic!

  6. A great photo. Emma knows exactly what she's doing having the "kids" in winter. Do you KNOW what it's like to be pregnant in the summer heat?!?

  7. This is where I would fail as a chicken keeper. I'd want to hatch out every viable egg..
