Saturday Schtuff

Okay, for the record, people, we don't have a camera on our bedroom ceiling (which is what a couple of my Facebook friend surmised when they saw this photo.) #1, this is our ugly pink guest room (slated for renos) and #2, MACBOOK AIR with camera! Sheesh! For the record, we don't have a disco ball on our ceiling either.

Emily the kitten has settled right in. I have more than a sneaking suspicion that she is going  to grow up to be boss cat. Time will tell! She's got a lot of spunk and attitude, and is also very sweet and cuddly. I keep joking that I don't need to spend money on facial exfoliants now, because her raspy little kitty-tongue is doing a fine job of keeping my face clean. She especially likes to clean the tip of my nose (which frankly I didn't think was all that dirty!) and my ear canals. Eeeeee! She does this when I am napping with her on the spare bed,

Kitten follies aside, it has been a busy and eventful week. She's okay now, but last Saturday afternoon, my mother-in-law fell in her kitchen, onto the hard tile floor. We didn't hear about this until Sunday afternoon, when she told us she had fallen on her side, banging her head on the cabinetry on the way down. She said she'd bruised her hip and hurt her shoulder but assured us she'd be fine. I was dubious.

Long story short, I ended up taking her to the ER on Tuesday. The doctor called her bruises "dramatic" and ordered an xray of her shoulder. Turns out she chipped her collarbone; no wonder it was hurting her so much! She was sent home with a sling and some painkillers and she's been finding those helpful.

Our province offers a free program whereby they'll send someone in to assess a senior citizen's home for safety hazards, and give recommendations for improvements. Mom has agreed to have that done so Gordon's lining it up. We have helped her make some improvements but clearly there is more to be done.

Probably I could do with a similar assessment myself, given my own talent for inuring myself at home. Back in when we lived in B.C., I badly tore a ligament in my ankle while foolishly carrying my cat downstair in a laundry basket. I was so busy talking nonsense to her that I missed that last step and the results were not pretty. I have been more careful on staircases ever since!

I am off to cuddle some kitteny cuteness. Have a great weekend.

  1. Best wishes to your M.I.L. for a full recovery. Having her home assessed is an excellent idea. She can retain her independence and know that all precautions to prevent further injury will have been put in place for her.
Glad to hear that the kitty is taking so well to her new home (was there any doubt)?!

  4. That's a wonderful photo (even if you don't have a camera on your ceiling). My lady really loves your updates. She said to tell you that she's reading your blog every day but doesn't always leave a comment! Naughty lady! xoxoxo

  5. No camera in your bedroom?
    Pretty boring!!!!!!!~:-)

    Get well soon, M.I.L.

Don't forget your other cats. They need cuddles and hugs, too.

Herman right now needs a lot of those, because he is not doing so well. Hope he pulls through. Today he feels a bit better, so keep your fingers crossed.

As you know, I've "been there, done that" with my own mother lately, so I can appreciate how scary it is to have your MIL fall and then not tell you about it right away. Navigating the world of elder care can get tricky. Best wishes to all of you.

  7. Best wishes to MIL! I plan on never getting older, so I'm never gonna fall or hurt myself. I'll let you know how that goes!

I've always carried cats in laundry baskets. You were doing nothing abnormal...

Umm, I'm going to go turn off the disco ball in my living room right now...

PS - Emily is a doll!
    Happy Sunday!

  8. Most accidental falls occur in the home . . . I tried to "elder-proof" my parents' home a few years beck (ran lighting strips along the floor in high traffic areas, covered pointy furniture corners etc.) but the moment I'd left they tore it all out.

My dad has since gone but it's only a matter of time for my 84-year-old mother . . . luckily my brother-in-law now lives with her and his wife is an RN and a plumber (!) and he's an excellent tradesman and chef.

But you watch yourself, Knattie, with all those animals . . . my dad broke his hip falling over Snowy the Siamese, who is now 17 years old and perfectly healthy, thank you very much. She must have shortened my dad's life by at least ten years!

  9. Paula, the doc says two months until her hematomas heal. SHe has NASTY bruises.

Deb, you are too kind. :)

Professor Longnose, I am also a crazy chicken lady!

Isobelle, I'm glad your Mom is enjoying the blog. I love yours, too.

Willie, don't worry, we're spreading the love around. Give Herman kisses from me.

TTPT, I am starting to feel your pain... hopefully I can learn some lessons from you!

Lynn, there is a 75-yo woman in my yoga class who is far more flexible than me. I plan to do yoga until they put me in the ground. SHe's inspirational!

Chef Nick, we're working on improving the safety situation at Mom's but she's stubborn! And I am sure I will break my neck tripping over my dog Tristan one day. He loves to sneak up and lie down behind me when I'm working in the kitchen.
