A little catch-up!

I have a few bits and pieces to post! At 7 am today, our thermometer looked like this...

It was -34C before I took this pic and it apparently went up a degree!

In nearby Cornwall, a record was broken (formerly -29C!)

No doubt we broke a record here, too. Some people couldn't start their cars. My friend Ronna's bathroom pipes froze! It's a bit early in the season (not even officially winter yet!) for these types of temperatures. But we're Canadian; we can hack it. :)

Louise has discovered the wonderful bird-watching perch in my office! She has thrown herself against the glass a couple of times.

On another day, she was joined by Naomi and Alex.

Meanwhile...

Emily hogged my already-hairy office chair. There always seems to be a cat on this seat. Usually I am sitting at the very edge with a sleeping cat behind me.

Louise has found other perches...

Amazingly, she has not yet knocked over the Christmas tree. In fact, she seems to have no interest in it whatsoever, which I find very surprising. I can only surmise that she is biding her time, plotting out some grand evil scheme of Christmas destruction!

And last week, Ronna and I made our annual pilgrimage to Winners (Canadian version of TJ Maxx.) We loaded up on all sorts of goodies...

We did scale back a bit this year. Last year we each filled a cart!

We have no shame!

Afterwards, we had lunch at Thum's Thai Kitchen in Cornwall...

Yum all around!

And last week...

...Gordon and I both gave blood.

I think of our friend Gary whenever I do this. He had many life-saving blood transfusions before we finally lost him to cancer last month. He inspired many people to donate!

Meanwhile, outside...

See that poor Grackle on the ground in the centre? They are not supposed to overwinter here! They go south. But he has a very short tail (growing in), and must not have been able to migrate. :( He has already survived one bad cold snap, so I'm hoping he'll make it through the winter. I put out lots of food for the birds, and I have a heated birdbath as well, so there's a water source. Fingers crossed for the poor thing!

If you would like to vote for Alex, he's still going strong in the iAdopt contest, which runs until December 31st. Click here. He's down towards the bottom of the page. Thanks for all the votes you've already given him.

Hope you are all having a good week!

  3. That is really really REALLY cold! Brrrrrrr.....
Louise is really making the most of her days :) And the office chair - with so many cats, there is not enough cat hair on it :)
I think blood donating is really the ultimate gift we can give. I am a blood donor as well, altough I am afraid of needles....
I really hope the little black birtdy makes it through the winter.
I voted for Alex, I hope he gets to win!

  5. Love Louise's ears at the bird window. Fingers crossed for the bird. I'm sure all your help will get it through. Warmer temps are on their way.

  6. We have 'men' here at the moment .We thought our water line had frozen but the 'men' think that either the transformer has gone on the pressure tank , or the well pump is a goner. Glad it's them out in the cold and not me!
The food looks amazing..well deserved after that marathon of retail support!

  8. First, I have to tell you that twenty below (F) is only a figure of speech; it shouldn't be allowed out and about.
About Louise--was that one fell swoop up there? What a girl!

  11. Lucky you to have a tree that stays upright! I'm getting kind of tired of standing mine back up. Your temps are a little colder than ours but it's been brutal here, too. I do the same as you - perch on the edge of the chair so the cat isn't disturbed. I have no idea why, as they can fall asleep in seconds in a new spot.

  12. Loved your odds and ends - I always enjoy the updates on your herd.
And your day with Ronna looked absolutely perfect. I'm envious!

  13. MINUS 34??? Is that even legal? So, tell me again why people live there. It's 15 here (with a big PLUS SIGN) and we're complaining. I want to go shopping with you and Ronna. Of course the Canadian version is cleaner than any TJ Maxx I've ever seen.

  14. I hear you about the weather and being Canadian. We have been snowbirds for the last 5 years so this is taking some getting used to again. Ontario may not be the best place to practice right now. I imagine we are getting much the same as you are here in Winchester.
