Look what we found in the barn today!

Yes, we did do the Duck Limerick contest judging, and yes, I will post the results VERY SOON but first, look what showed up in the barn this afternoon:

One of the free-ranging "Muffs" had a secret nest on a beam. Gordon got quite the surprise this afternoon when he came across her leading around ELEVEN CHICKS!! (Ten of which will no doubt turn out to be roosters!)

I put them all in a bucket and brought mother hen into the chicken coop, where we fenced everybody off for the time being.

We really don't need eleven more chickens, but they are awfully cute. I'm betting the six black ones are the children of Errol Flynn, the Barred Plymouth Rock!

This Muff is an excellent mother! She needs a name. I never named the Muffs because I couldn't tell them apart when I first got them, but now I can. It will be interesting to see what these babies grow up to look like.

If you need a chicken, let me know....

  11. If I need a chicken???? Of course I do, but I am afraid you won't give it to me.
    Very cute surprise.

And, by the way, do you know that chickens are the only animal you eat before
they are born and after they are dead.

    1. I have scooped chicks and ducklings into a bucket more than once! You get them all in there and then Mama follows behind you as you move the babies to wherever they're going (new duck house, whatever!) :)
