A beautiful day for kayaking

On Sunday, we took our kayaks down to South Lancaster, to paddle on the part of the St. Lawrence River known as Lake St. Francis. Just before we went out, there were two torrential downpours, which we waited out first in the marina, then the car. We launched our kayaks at Hybrid Marine, where they also sell and rent out kayaks, canoes and other boats. The owner was very nice and helpful, and we finally bought a couple of proper kayaking lifejackets for kayaking. We were tired of being all bulked out in regular lifejackets when we paddled!

The sky was dramatic, the water like glass:

This is Cairn Island, home to the Glengarry Cairn. Next time we'll paddle closer to it.

Mallard! We encountered several ducks on our outing. Most of them flew off at the sight of us, but this one calmly paddled between me and Gordon.

A view coming out of one of the canals near the Cooper Marsh Conservation Area.

My paddling companion with the perpetual smile. Kayaking makes us both very happy.

Many shades of blue, and Cairn Island.

I was very glad those dark clouds didn't open up and dump rain on us!

Bright green, highly visible on the water! I'm looking smug again. I'm getting good at that.

Lily pads and glassy water.

Love those lily pads!

Coming up on a duck nest box in the marsh.

A turtle basking platform. We need to make one of these for the pond on our farm.

I'm not sure what this is... a duck blind? There were a few of them in the marsh.

Calgon, take me away! (If you remember that commercial, you're at least as old as me!)

Back near the marina, there were lots of Canada geese and lots of half-grown goslings. Coming soon to a golf course near you!

Colourful rental boats!

And time to rack up and go home. Sigh... I can't wait to go back! It's only about a 20-minute drive from our house, so there's not excuse not to go often.

  1. Hi Nat,

the Geese and Gooslings are allready at the golf course.
    I love your pics.
Seeing all this, we are happy to be back to nature in the near future.

  2. Aaaah! I would gladly give all my grey hair for one hour back in a kayak....Sceneries were also beautiful on the Pangnirtung Fiord. A bit cold, and no birds flying. But oh! the sky and the snowy mountains! I would love my Inuit friends to go kayaking in your waters. Maybe the geese would suffer though. By necessity, the Inuits are always in search of food. And nature provides it...

  5. I was a bit behind on your posts, but must make a comment on Gordon's toast humour. (from a few day's back) I laughed out loud! (which one shouldn't do at work - given the funny looks one gets!).
Did not know the man had such amazing wit. ....and brings you breakfast to boot.
    Lucky girl!

  7. John,

I totally agree. Too much goddamn water. I used to live on the Congo river at Stanleypool where it was about 20 miles wide (you could barely see the other side) and I'd see these maniacs in their pirogues about the size of half a dust mite paddling down it.

Maybe we should take up a collection for Knattie and Gordini and send them on a nice little jaunt down Stanleypool to the Rapids.

I would love to see Knattie's arms-length camera shot THEN.

  8. Willie, your new spot by the lake looks beautiful!!

Claudia, I wish you would write a book. You have led the most incredibly fascinating life. I would LOVE to kayak in Nunavut. One day! How idyllic.

John, are you a landlubber? :) You could just stay on shore and look at the pretty water!

Shelley, kayaking is the best, isn't it? You have such a beautiful spot to kayak in.

Elisabeth, that guy just gets funnier all the time. He has a very dry wit. I feel pretty lucky to have him. He's very good to me!!

Lizz, it's gorgeous down there. We plan to go back next week.

Chef Nick, you've led a fascinating life too, although I'm not sure if it's all non-fiction. ;))) You can write a book too!
