Dogs love mud...

...not to mention water! Sophie goes for a swim in the river on our farm, with a damselfly hitching a ride on her back (down near her tail.)

Then we visited our pond, where the dogs decided they both wanted to fetch the same stick.

Here they are, poised and ready for me to toss a stick into the pond!

And this is what happens when you go digging in riverbanks for muskrats...

Last year they actually caught and killed one, which was not pretty for either the poor muskrat or the dogs! Muskrats have sharp teeth and the dogs had bites under their chins. Fortunately, everything healed up fine without infection. No such happy ending for that muskrat! I most definitely do NOT encourage these two to be mighty hunters, and yet they persist in merrily bringing me portions of groundhog, rotten dead things, limp squirrels... sigh.

  3. James, my husband likes to compare having dogs to having kids, and I'm always given him grief over that (because I think kids are just a TAD more work than dogs!!!!) but in this case, you are right: little boys and dogs go out in the noon day mud!
