Remember the surprise chicks Mama Emma secretly hatched out in the barn in June? They've grown like weeds!
Some of them went to live across the road with my friend Judy. I've got six left and I am suspicious that three of them may be roosters. Or four. Let's hope not. From their colouring, I'd say Lord Gaga was daddy to the two on the left, Beaker was proud papa to the two brown ones in the centre, and Errol Flynn is continuing his bloodlines with the two on the right!
That guy in the centre at top shares much of Beaker's colouring, including the green in the tail.
The black/white ones are the spitting image of their dad Errol, except one has a muff (beard-like cheek feathers) like Mama Emma!
And those white ones HAVE to be the spawn of...
...Lord Gaga!
Here are give of the six hanging out in the barn. The Beaker-kid on the right has really pretty colouring...
Their Mama joined them for this shot. She tried to build another secret nest in a cardboard box in the barn, but Gordon found it and took away the eggs. She sure is a good little brooder!
Here she is consorting with Errol, while Beaker shows Tina Turner a tasty tidbit in the ground!
Quite the party-pack!
And here are a few other chickens...
Penelope enjoying the sun. Those black round things around here are hollowed-out black walnuts. This used to be a wood shed, and the squirrels stored zillions of nuts in there.
Errol and Penelope having a good preening!
Snoozy hen.
Hope you enjoyed your chicken fix!
We used to have a cockerel just like Errol. His name was Big Business, and he was an aggressive bast*rd. One day he attacked my young daughter, so he ended up as lunch!
ReplyDeleteYou've reminded me; I must saw logs!
Love the name, don't blame you for stewing him after he attacked your daughter. I found a great website on bringing up nice roosters and followed their advice. It worked really well. I have three roosters who get along and have never bothered a human. They've had a few little tiffs amongst themselves but have settled down to live quite happily together. Now, I'm not sure what's going to happen if I have three or four MORE roosters in that batch of chicks!!!
DeleteWhat happened to those tiny little chicks? They are huge!!!!
ReplyDeleteI knew mama Emma couldn't decide between all those gorgeous roosters. She had to go for all of them :)
Indeed she did! Lots of free love in the barnyard.
DeleteEmma certainly likes to play the field. Maybe you should have a little talk with her before she gets a reputation in the barnyard! It's not the sixties anymore. ~ Maureen
ReplyDeleteHahahahaha! It's always the 60s down in the coop. My virgin eyes!! ;)
DeleteI think that you should move to Henley-on-Thames immediately.
ReplyDeleteJust an hour down the road from my uncle and aunt! BUt why? Should I be rowing?
DeleteGreat photos! That last one with the scenic wagon wheel looks like a stock photo. Cool!
ReplyDeleteThanks Sarah! We got a few interesting bits and pieces of farm stuff when we bought this place.
DeleteFun, fun, fun!! Love chickens. They all turned out pretty. And, they sure do grow faster than weeds, almost.
ReplyDeleteI like how different they all are. And this year, nothing is growing faster than the weeds. I have never seen anything like the weeds this hot, dry summer!
DeleteChickens are so decorative - I've been wanting to do some chicken drawings lately......... thanks for the pics!
ReplyDeleteMy pleasure! I have plans for some chicken art myself. :)
DeleteNever had a chicken myself. But they are handsome birds, they are!
ReplyDeleteTHey really are funny little characters!
Deletehahaha! that was such an amusing read and the corresponding pictures were so cute ;)
ReplyDeleteI never knew how much fun chickens were until I got my own. They always make me smile!
DeleteIt was a long day today so I so enjoyed your chicken fix. :)
ReplyDeleteGlad to be of service! I love to go down and hang with them when I have a break during the day. THey always help me relax and laugh.
Delete:)
ReplyDeleteSuch gorgeous colours they are! Many years ago, I had a little flock of white chickens. I dabbed them with purple wound dressing so that I could tell them apart.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a smart idea!! I 've got some brown Sex Links hens I can't tell apart!
