Bath-time for the geriatric one!

So yesterday, I decided it was high time Lenny the blind, geriatric (27 yo!) OSPCA rescue duck had a bath...

"You're not looking your best, Lenny!"

Now, I am fully aware that ducks know how to bathe themselves BUT my flock of mostly Muscovy ducks doesn't have much access to swimming water during the cold winter months. And Muscovy ducks don't need to bathe as much as some other breeds do.

Lenny was way overdue and smelling distinctly musty, sooo...

...into the tub he went, and might I add, VERY happily!

He swam and splashed for half an hour before I finally dragged him out.

Then of course I needed to get him dry. It was cold out last night and I didn't want the old boy catching a chill.

He didn't seem to mind the towels, but they weren't enough to soak up all the water, sooo...

..out came the hairdryer! No, this is not the first time I have blow-dried a duck. Watch here if you need proof.

Lenny was looking QUITE handsome by the time I finished. And yes...

... there's video! :) Excuse me for sounding yet again like a babbling lunatic. This always happens when I talk to my animals.

And yes, I scoured the tub afterwards.

    2. Actually we have done it with a cat after a big messy accident with her bowels and after a second or so of panic she absolutely loved the warm water. She just went limp and started purring. Came up lovely and white and sweet-smelling.

    1. Me neither, but then I read that Mallards can live to 20 in the wild! Our Warren the Muscovy is now 9.

  7. This duck is spoiled rotten. I guess with his age, his feathers are not in great condition as the oil should keep the feathers from getting soaking wet.

    1. I think he was also really overdue for a bath, and the bath stimulated him to give himself a good preening. He's looking much better now!

    1. I think he was very much loved at his former home. They were an elderly couple who had to give him up for health reasons of their own.
