Thanks to Kristine for pointing out that I have five new Ameracaunas, not Araucanas! I don't mind, since I mainly got them because I wanted coloured eggs. Apparently there is some confusion about the breeds, although Kristine's explanation made it pretty obvious to me. Araucanas are known as "rumpless". Among other things, they have no tail feathers that stick up.
Anyway, this morning I got the blue egg on the left from the buffy-coloured hen, the green egg from one of the others (didn't catch her in the act) and the bottom egg from good old Georgiana. Georgiana is nearly three now!
I think the coloured eggs are really cool. I would like some Maran hens now. They lay dark-brown eggs.
You need to have a contest: Who's Layin' Who?
ReplyDeleteOr something like that.
I like the way you think, girl!
DeleteYou're welcome. :)
ReplyDelete=)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katnip Lounge you need to have a contest : Who´s layin who :)
ReplyDeleteBut do they taste the same?
ReplyDeleteGood question. I need to make an omelette and find out.
DeleteDesigner eggs!
ReplyDeleteIt's very chi-chi poo-poo in my barn. Well, more like very poo-poo...
DeleteNow your comment on three year old Georgiana. Mad me curious. How long do you keep your chickens? We kept them for only one year.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a real farmer, I would axe the hens at a year old, which is when their laying starts to decline. But because I am a city slicker with a bunch of pet chickens, they will live until they die! Three of our hens are FOUR years old this year! A bunch are three, and some are two. I'm getting a few more youngsters this spring. We do have lots of space for them so it's not a problem.
DeleteMy hens are being very lazy..... I'd even welcome a polka dotted one!
ReplyDeleteOh likewise! I'm glad we're finally getting some eggs. My ducks are completely on strike. My hens are not popping out many. I had to go buy a dozen from the grocery last week. That just about kills me. They aren't the same!
DeleteThat blue egg is such a pretty color.... and so huge!
ReplyDeleteWhile my chickens had decided to try killing each other, your's are laying Easter eggs! grrrr
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I've been through that. Are you giving them something to distract them from murder? I throw black oilseed (sunflower seeds) out for the every day, which they love. I also hang a red cabbage in their coop and they go at that. They can be so mean to each other sometimes!
DeleteOh my....those are beautiful. They would make great paint colors for rooms! I just saw someone with a basket of all different colored eggs ... it is so nice that you can get those with your chickens. Makes breakfast even more enjoyable.
