Birdies in a snowstorm

We're having quite the snowstorm today, but the northeast US is going to get worse than us, that's for sure.

The birds were all very hungry and busy at the feeders today!

Bluejays, party of four? Bluejays, party of four!

Gathering of Mourning Doves

Very cold and windy today. This poor little male Downy Woodpecker is very wind-blown.

Mrs. Cardinal chows down.

Woodpecker snagged a peanut!

American Tree Sparrow hanging out.

This little female Downy Woodpecker hung out here for ages.

The turkeys came for a visit too....

..then saw me at the kitchen window and fled across the neighbouring field!

A little Redpoll

Two American Tree Sparrows taking a break.

And another Redpoll chowing down!

Have a great weekend. :)

  1. Oh Natalie, these are beautiful. The white background really brings out the subject. Stunning photos. The American Tree Sparrows with the apricot hats are so beautiful. The poor things today really worked to get to their feeders. I know you love winter but I am longing for Spring along with the birds. Hugs

    1. I think my best bird shots have been the ones taken in snowstorms this winter! You're right, it's the contrast I think. We have so many Tree Sparrows.

I think spring will be here soon. I am hearing a lot of birdsong out there!

    1. We do very well here for birdlife. Lots of woods, fields, creek, pond, river... good bird habitat. Plus free meals! ;)

  6. You get my prize for 'Bird photographer of 2013'.

I have a book, by a late friend, of all the birds that came to her garden. She was totally absorbed by her little friends, and her book is fascinating. But her photographic illustrations are dreadful... if only you'd been there to help!

  9. Wow! Natalie!! you got some really wonderful photos. I LOVE birds!!!! That first one is my favorite. I'm so glad you are kind to feed the poor birds who would otherwise might be hungry with so much snow around.

    1. I feed them all winter, and we have a heated birdbath too. Anything to help! They have a tough time out there in winter. And it's so nice to watch them at the feeders.

  14. I miss feeding them, but I don,t miss the snowstorms.
By now you must be graving for summer. And by the way, how is
the black cat? Does she/he becomes a new family member?
    Have a great weekend, too.

  15. Natalie, your photos are just wonderful, love the blurry snow flakes as they are blown around.
That poor little Blue Jay in the first pic, looks like he's holding on to the branch with all he's got.
Love the Woodpecker too.....what an array of birdlife.......just beautiful.
I'm sure the cats were happy to stay inside in this weather and leave the birds to it........
