I took photos of the North Bay shad fly invasion mentioned in the previous post. These don't do it justice, as the hotel manager had washed down the windows prior to me taking these. The night before, everything was blanketed more thickly!
Yes, the ground is coated with dead ones.
"No sucking mouth parts"... aren't you glad?
Oh, MAN! I don't think I could sleep at night!! EWWWWWWWWWW!!!!
ReplyDeleteEwwwww, but my boys would love some for entomology project. Cool looking even though it creeps me out to see so many.
ReplyDeleteIck!
ReplyDeleteah yes ... in Michigan they're called "fish flies". I remember in the coast guard having to run down the dock for an emergency or whatever and slipping on their piled up bodies... ick ..vomit.
ReplyDeleteDo they bite? Or do they just exist?
ReplyDeleteSO...there is no real reason for their existence, other then to stink up the place when they die. Interesting.
ReplyDeleteWaiter, bring me shad roe!
ReplyDeletewe have a cabin at spirit lake iowa and we have had 3 batchs come thru this summer. the last batch everything was covered and when they hatch they hatch out of the lake and leave their skins on top of the water. YUCK FO SWIMMING!! for the kids and for mom when they die the leave green spots ALL OVER YOUR WINDOWS. I HATE THESE THINGS.
ReplyDeletethese are eel flies not shad flies!
ReplyDeletewhen theres lots of shad flies ( comparitively) its a sign that lake nippissing is healthy.
ReplyDeleteyes there are shad flies , but there are many names people use depending where they are
That is horrible. It reminds me of the ladybug infestation at our friend's place in the Eastern Townships.
