Hey Sailor! Song of the kitty love-siren.

Our house is filled with unbridled, urequited feline LUST. Emily has gone into heat. We were planning on having her spayed very soon, but apparently she couldn't wait (she's not quite six months old.) I know cats can go into heat before six months of age, but it has never happened to us before. Until now. Oh joy.

On Saturday, the little minx started yowling and chirping and offering up her butt to anyone passing by.

She worked especially hard at trying to entice Alex, but being the eunuch he is, he was utterly unimpressed. At one point he just stepped over her and walked away. I begged with him to ease her sufffering with a, er, mercy "union", but he wouldn't listen.

After some extensive internet reading, I know now that cats in heat flatten themselves to the floor, lift up their behinds, move their tails to the side, and paddle their back feet, all while letting out a large variety of pitiful and/or seductive yowls, meows, and chirps. The look and sound DESPERATE. Lucky us!

There's no one Emily wouldn't give it away to...

Gordon.

Naomi.

Sophie (the DOG!)

And of course, Alex. Not to mention me, Tristan, Julius, and a stuffed toy cow.

And when that doesn't work, let's stare out the window and pray for some sexy tomcat to saunter by.

My friends aren't helping by suggesting that she'd have beautiful kittens!

Don't worry, we're firmly in the "Have your pet spayed or neutered" camp. Emily is an indoor cat, but we will have to be extra diligent about making sure she doesn't run outside before her spay.

I slept with earplugs last night. We'll be calling the vet this morning!

  3. When our (then) newbie Abigail went into heat, the object of her desire was Jacob...a neutered boy with no idea why the floozie was chasing him all over the house. He'd see her in a room , do a prompt about turn and run away!

Poor Emily, it must have something to do with that full huge moon. Beautiful photos by the way -- of the moon (below) and and that sex kitten. They grow up so fast ...

    1. Thank you!! Imagine, a floozy at 5-1/3 months of age. WHat will she be like as a teenager?!

  5. Oh dear! Poor little Emily. I confess that I fell about laughing, especially when I saw the photographs - I love Naomi's expression.

She would have beautiful kittens... sorry. I, not originally being a cat person, went through this with my first house kitty -- a long-haired calico named K'Mere. It took me moment to fiqure out this was cat heat and not a fit worthy of a vet emergency.

    1. It certainly is a dramatic display! "Fit" describes it well! :)

  8. Oh dear, I had to cover the eyes of my cats, so they couldn't see those X-rated pictures!
I think Emily's kittens will play wonderfully with the new ducklings :)... imagine 9 kittens and 9 ducklings chasing each other around the house... how blissful! :)

    1. Ahab. That is the most poetic description of a cat in heat I have ever seen.

    2. That's an awfully lovely way of putting it. And here I was just calling her "you little horndog" all weekend...

  11. Gosh, she's such a beautiful cat, and cats in heat are unbearable! I felt like I was torturing the cat by not letting her give in to her desires.

Hope you get some sleep with all the yowling...

    1. I wore earplugs but hubby did not. Emily woke him up eight times on Monday night with her "serenading!"

I think she is really a gorgeous little thing. To think someone just dumped her here at six weeks of age. I will never forget how striking her markings looked against the snow as I chased her around trying to catch her.

  12. Nothing so heartbreaking and annoying as a needy cat! I really do like those stripes, though.
