Dusted with gold

Here's the honeybee I mentioned in my last post. Bees have pollen "baskets" on their rear legs. These ones were stuffed to bursting...

She was taking nectar from the dandelion too.

Look how the yellow pollen is sticking to her hairy little body!

And here's another honeybee dusted with gold:

Off she goes to find another flower!

Bumblebees love dandelions too.

As does this stripey little fly guy!

More duckling photos and videos coming soon.

  1. Beautiful shots Knatolee, I love bees, they are such busy workers but always humming........so they must be happy!!

Pollen baskets remind me bike panniers, stuffed to the brim.

Looks like you're having some great weather at the moment.

  3. Great shots Nat. I managed a close up of a hoverfly yesterday... no homeybees to be seen. I wish the small nest we had 110 years go kept going

  6. That fly looked scary! Does it mimic bees to keep from being eaten?

    1. I'm sure it does! Other insects use that yellow/black combo to ward off predators!

  9. Yet more great photos, I love 'em!

This is probably a stupid question but what are the pollen baskets made from? Is it skin or something that can expand when the pollen is put in?
