Julius gave me a hand, er, paw, wrapping Christmas presents the other day...

And now for something completely different. Anyone know what kind of tree/shrub this is? They are thorny and have sprung up along the drain (creek) that runs through out property. I thought they were hawthorn but I think I am confusing them with the ones that have bigger thorns.
Maybe the pea-pod things will help with I.D. And there are little thorns all over these!
I got all my Christmas cards and gifts mailed out yesterday. If any of them actually arrive before Christmas, it'll be a miracle...

ReplyDeleteHoney locust, perhaps? We have honey locusts in this region, and they're covered with infernal-looking clusters of thorns.

ReplyDeleteProbably a black locust. Possibly a honey locust. When it gets larger it will be easier to tell the difference between them, but the size of the pod looks more like a mature black locust.
ReplyDeleteEither way, it seems to be pushing its range and becoming naturalized well beyond its previous range.
Okay, my forester friend identified it as black locust!
