Esme and Finney

The ponies have names! And because I am not  a Twilight fan, I didn't realize my girl was named after a character until I was informed by other, more savvy people!

Finney is the boy I'm holding, Esme is the gal behind me. I like Albert Finney, and we seem to have a tradition of giving our boy pets surnames as first names (Emerson, Redford.)

My friend Debbie is teaching me to train the ponies. I have to do ten minutes a day of "walk" and "whoa." Esme, who is 12, has no problem with this. She follows me and Finney and does it all on her own. Finney has more attitude but then he is a recently-gelded three-year-old. Still, he's not too bad. A bit nippy but we're working on it. He's such a youngster! Very mischievious. I really like him.

Gordon took them for a spin too.

They both look a little dubious here.

The temperatures are on the rise and everything is a big, sloppy, muddy mess! It's supposed to hit 18C tomorrow before temperatures drop again. But that's okay, because I'm getting a very special "parcel" tomorrow that will appreciate not arriving in the bitter cold. And that's all I'm going to say for now! :)

And I'm grateful I don't live in Buffalo! Those poor people were hammered last week. I have a local friend who was visiting her sister there and decided to leave last Monday instead of Tuesday. She'd still be there now if she hadn't made that decision, because her sister's laneway was just cleared out today.

Here's Gordon walking Finney. Have a happy Sunday!

  1. They're beauties! And Gordon looks fine, too. :)
I love that Esme obediently follows - and stops - behind Gordon and Finney. (which rhymes, you know, with whinney!)

  2. You guys just look so 'right' with these ponies. Love the photos. And yes, they do look dubious, those two. I'm glad the weather is changing for us too. Lots more to do at the property. I am so excited to see your package arrive. You guys are the best.

  3. Beautiful ponies, Knatolie! Could you remind us of the difference between a horse and a pony? Is it just the size?

  4. Yes, a pony is really just a small horse. The dividing line is 14 hands, although that can be a bit flexible! :)

  5. And how is the training of Good Gordon coming along?

Perhaps still a work in progress, but you do seem to have him in harness pretty well.

And I've reverted to my old and noble persona as a deluded Don (since that is pretty much what I am.

  9. What do you intend to do with them? Are they to become children's riding ponies?

  10. So, are these ponies the practice trainees before the draft horses arrive? It's pouring rain here and all the snow is gone. Given that my property is pure clay, it will be a slippery walk to the chicken coop tomorrow!

  14. Beautiful photos and video. Sometimes I want your life. Then I see the snow and Gordon nearly falls on his behind in mud and I remember you have to muck out stalls and... well, I will just enjoy it all from a distance.(But it IS a truly wonderful life!)
