The honey bees are in full swing and I will do my first honey extraction next week. The girls were all over my false spirea yesterday:
Busy little things, gathering sweetness. And then...
...there's Stinky!
This baby skunk spent the night in our garage last night. A local farmer found him starving behind their house and took him in.Turns out another neighbour shot the mama skunk, orphaning four babies. The farmer saw the babies in the field before finding this little one; likely the other babies perished. :(
Apparently there was some talk of making the skunk a pet, which is not only a bad idea, but illegal here. After two or three weeks, my friend talked the farmer into handing over the skunk, and I called our OSPCA agent, who collected Stinky this morning and drove him to the Sandy Pines Wildlife Centre in Napanee.
I got an update from them this afternoon. Stinky is in great shape (the farmer took good care of him!) and has been placed with a group of other skunk babies his own age. In the fall, he will be released together with his new little family.
Last night and this morning, I made a nice plate of scrambled eggs (and peas!) for our guest, who ate them all up.
So cute! A happy ending for this little stinker.
Have a great weekend!
Awww, very cute, what a shame they have to be stinky!
ReplyDeleteStinky is a real cutie ♡♥♡
ReplyDeleteSandy Pines is a great place for Stinky!
ReplyDeleteJane x
I want a stinky
ReplyDeleteI'd come round for scrambled eggs and peas, myself. Good he came to a good end.
ReplyDeleteBEES!!! HURRAH!!!
ReplyDeleteAnd what a cute lil' guy...*I* would not have eaten the peas!
Aside from being illegal, I've heard that you can make a pet out of a skunk. They are very definitely cute.
ReplyDeleteGahhh! Why don't people think of this when they shoot an animal. This time of year there is such a high chance that there are babies somewhere. I guess some people wouldn't care or think about that. Well, good ending for this little one because of people who do care. Deb
ReplyDeleteOh I meant to say your photos of the bees are gorgeous. I just got off track there.
ReplyDeleteHe or she looks v cute, but I bet those claws could do some damage.
ReplyDeleteWow, there's always something or other going on at your farm!
ReplyDeleteIt's awfully tempting to take in such a cute, little thing but the problems down the road are endless. So glad this had a happy ending. Now that the skunk is gone, I wouldn't mind you making me that breakfast!
ReplyDeleteFinally, bee photos! And such amazing ones, too!
ReplyDeleteI am glad Stinky will get to enjoy his life with his new sibling! He really is cute!
Your little guy is adorable, but unfortunately around here (in Texas) skunks very often carry the rabies virus. I'm afraid he wouldn't have been lucky enough to be rescued. I'm glad he's going to be returned to the wild. He really is very cute!
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE Stinky!! What a kind farmer - and you played quite the hostess with your "skunk brunch"!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are so incredibly crisp and beautiful, Knatolee!
ReplyDeleteStinky is so cute. We're glad he/she will have some friends to grow up with.
ReplyDeleteAw, what an adorable little stinker.
ReplyDeleteAdorable bee photos :-)
ReplyDeleteAwww, so cute. Sad about his family. What is with this shotgun mania?
ReplyDeleteThat Stinky eats better than I do. I am glad for you two that it is illegal to peticize skunks in ON.
