Last weekend, our amazing young friend Sam and Jake (who are also twins!) came to help us move all our firewood inside for the winter. I think they moved about eight cords but I'm not sure. This involved using the tractor to ferry bucketloads of wood from the granary to the basement window. One person then tossed all the wood through the window while the other stacked it inside. Gordon, Sam and Jake worked on this for about three hours while I was inside making lasagne for supper!
When it was all done, it was a thing of beauty....

That wood is three rows deep to the back wall. Amazing! This year, I won't be nagging Gordon to bring in more wood in the middle of January! :)
Those two "boys" are a great help to us!
Please send the twins.We have four bush cords to split and stack. I'll even make lasagne!

ReplyDeleteThe cage has different sections and tunnels and is really quite big. They love it! We don't let them out because we have so many cat-eating predators around here. They don't seem to mind being confined to the house and the cat. THere are some pics of the cage here:

DeleteOh - the sight of that wood makes me cringe. When I was a kid, the house we lived in was a bit of an oddity.The kitchen was an addition, and it wasn't heated by the furnace. The only source of heat was a pot bellied wood stove. So... every October, before he left for moose hunting, Dad would have 10 cords of wood delivered (dumped in the middle of the driveway) and while he was splitting the larger pieces with the axe, it was up to my brother and I to stack it all on the enclosed back porch. It took days - and I hated every minute of it.

Oh poor YOU!!!! I was the wood stacker here until this year, and I must say that it was NOT my favourite activity. Got tennis elbow one year. Poor you, child labour!

DeleteAaaahhhh, the smell of wood in the fireplace. We loved it too, back in Nova Scotia. Here in Germany the wood is very expensive, but even so, more and more people want it. Anyhow, looks like you are all set for the winter
ReplyDeleteI remember how expensive wood was in NS!! It's a lot cheaper around here. My buddy Eugene cut all that wood and we bought it from him.

ReplyDeleteGOrdon just saw real estate ad for a farmhouse around here that claimed you "only" need 25 cords of wood to heat it through the winter. Gaaaack! They obviously have an uninsulated house with only a wood-burning heat source.
