I have been a bit negligent about posting poultry pix as of late, and the feathered gang wanted me to rectify that appalling situation. So here you go!
Zydeco the Partridge Chantecler rooster, doing a little dance in the sand I used to fill a mudhole!
Errol Flynn, our Barred Rock rooster. He is top rooster now!
The guineas!
My beloved Charlotte, who along with Nadia turns FOUR on July 9th! I think we should have a birthday party for them. They are, sadly, the only two remaining of our original 13 Sex-Links hens. But they both seem content, if geriatric. Here's a post from the day we got them.
Charlotte is looking pretty good now that her moult is finished!
And here's Lauren the Ameraucana sitting in the grit/oyster shell bowl.
Penelope turns three this summer!
Mama Emma and her little one. Fingers crossed the chick is NOT a rooster.
Penelope looking pretty.
Everyone approves of the new enclosed bird run. Some approve too much. Amy Winehouse is demonstrating his delight with Bianca, front right. Oops.
We are still cleaning all the crap out of the run, and I need to figure out what to do with the ground. It used to be grass until the post-hole digging started. The crazy amount of rain we had in June did not help either. Any suggestions for what to put on the ground? It would be nice to have grass again. Most of the run is under wire "roofing", so it gets enough light for things to grow.
Penelope wanted another photo!
And here's Amelia the Ameraucana, enjoying some watermelon. Her "beard" is all pink from watermelon juice!
McGuinty, my very handsome Chantecler rooster.
Guineas on patrol. Going left...
...going right. They are getting slightly more used to me!
So. Much. LUMBER!!!!
That ramshackle little building is the sturdy work of Gordon. It's where we put the ducklings with their mama for a month or so after they've hatched.
There's a gate at either end of the run. Very useful!
Watermelon is very popular with everyone. This run does a good job of keeping everyone safe in the day. Nobody escapes any more. At night they go into their respective coops. The guineas are happily bunking with the chickens.
One of the pools has a leak, alas. We'll buy another one!
Bianca (white duck), Amy Winehouse (yes, a boy duck!) and Robert Downey Jr. One of you readers came up with Robert's name, but I forget who! Anyway, it's perfect!
Now I need to finish cleaning up the debris and pretty this up somehow!
I would happily sit on one of those chairs, sip coffee (or a lemonade) and watch your tribe all day long. Such an interesting group, one by one, and together! So glad that they're safe in such a wide enclosure.
ReplyDeleteI'd get you a nicer chair to sit in! :)
DeleteThat post of long ago was so cute!
ReplyDeleteYou have some very handsome birds. we only had white leghorns. A red chicken and gray barred birds. I can't even remember what they wee called.
ReplyDeleteThat's okay, most of my chickens are mutts! :)
DeleteEmma and the chick are adorable, as always. How did Errol become the top rooster? How are the other roosters reacting to this?
ReplyDeleteTHey are taking it well. Errol has always been a lover, not a fighter, but I've seen him knocking all the other roosters off hens lately, a sure sign of his dominance! THe roo crew have been getting along very well.
DeleteThat really is one luxury run, and some lovely looking birds to occupy it. They make my 'Turkens' look SO VERY UGLY.
ReplyDeleteOhhh, some of my chickens were looking PRETTY RATTY this past winter!!!
DeleteErrol Flynn has the most magnificent tail.
ReplyDeleteGood to see them safe now.
He is such a nice rooster. I really like him!
DeleteChickens really are pretty aren't they.
ReplyDeleteWould sunflowers grow alongside the buildings? Areas of ground cover to attract bugs for snacks? Chicken sized sun loungers? Peck up bar?
Jane x
I like all of your ideas. The area right against the barn is now in shade, otherwise the sunflowers would be great. But you are giving me ideas, especially the peck up bar!
DeleteI would suggest it needs nothing, and along comes Jane and upstages me with really good ideas. Fowl of the world should rejoice that I neither farm nor cook.
ReplyDeleteWhat a delightful and handsome assortment of poultry you have! Mama Emma is looking pretty proud of her perky youngster. I really appreciate all the fine photos and descriptions of your brood.
ReplyDeleteI love poultry photos! They are all so cute, but I have to say Penelope is just beautiful :) Of my first flock, I have three hens left and they all turn four this August. Hard to believe! They are all still in really good shape, thank goodness.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering what would happen if you put one of the cats in the run with the birds?!
ReplyDeleteA lovely brood, they all look so different.
