The other day, one of the Muscovy ducks laid one whopper of a gigantic egg...
On the left is a regular duck egg, which is larger than a chicken egg. On the right is the monstrosity we found down in the duck coop!
130 grams! That's 4.6 oz for you Americans. :) That egg is a quarter-pounder.
A normal duck egg next to the humungo-egg. I haven't cracked it open yet, but I'm wondering how many yolks are inside. All the girl-ducks seem fine, so whoever laid it managed to do so without blowing out her vent!

ReplyDeleteI remember on the farm there were double yolked eggs. As kids we always wanted the double yolked egg.
ReplyDeleteWe get the odd chicken egg that's a double yolker, but this was the first double-yolked duck egg (my friend Ronna cooked it up!)

I do! I think they taste like chicken eggs, maybe a little richer, and the yolk and white are a bit firmer/denser. They are GREAT in baking. Just substitue a duck egg one for one for a chicken egg. I think things rise better with duck eggs.
DeleteI have laid eggs (of the musical kind), but the public seems to have forgotten them. If eggs can have two yolks, can they have no yolks?
ReplyDeleteThey can! We get all kinds of freak-show eggs when the chickens start laying for the first time. It's like they crank out some mistakes before things start working properly. You also sometimes get eggs without proper shells, or with weird, soft gelatinous shells...

DeleteYou're probably right. An ostrich must have sneaked in overnight just to see if you were paying attention. Look for dinosaur-like prints if the ground isn't frozen yet.

DeleteThe double-yolked eggs I've had were normal size. Have you seen a seven-foot tall, long (featherless)necked, flightless bird hanging out near the duck pens? (Seeing that egg still makes me go "ow.")

ReplyDeleteThey are a little richer, but not much different. And the yolks and whites are firmer! They're great in baking.
