Yes, we did do the Duck Limerick contest judging, and yes, I will post the results VERY SOON but first, look what showed up in the barn this afternoon:
One of the free-ranging "Muffs" had a secret nest on a beam. Gordon got quite the surprise this afternoon when he came across her leading around ELEVEN CHICKS!! (Ten of which will no doubt turn out to be roosters!)
I put them all in a bucket and brought mother hen into the chicken coop, where we fenced everybody off for the time being.
We really don't need eleven more chickens, but they are awfully cute. I'm betting the six black ones are the children of Errol Flynn, the Barred Plymouth Rock!
This Muff is an excellent mother! She needs a name. I never named the Muffs because I couldn't tell them apart when I first got them, but now I can. It will be interesting to see what these babies grow up to look like.
If you need a chicken, let me know....
So sweet!!!!
ReplyDeleteEMMA! Double M's for Mama Muff.
ReplyDeleteI love the name Emma! Emma it is!

ReplyDeleteI think I speak for everyone here when I say SQUEEEEEEEEEE! Those chicks are adorable. I'm glad there are more babies at the farm.
ReplyDeleteOooo! I like the creamy colored chick that is always seeming to look at the camera. Mom hen is a good looker too! My lady loves hens and chicks. I hope they are all little girls! hee hee hee
ReplyDeleteSO do I but I'm not holding my breath! :)
DeleteWith my dreadful track record with ducklings, I must decline. Good luck with the little darlings!
ReplyDeleteOh how Cute they are..I want ALL of them.
ReplyDeleteI'd call her Stella. So when you call out her name it's like Brando."STELLAAA"
Stella is a great chicken name!

ReplyDeleteThey sure are! :)
DeleteHa ha ha!!! talk about a surprise :)
ReplyDeleteI really like Emma too!
They are adorable. I wonder what they would do if you put them with the ducklings :)
Such a clever Mommy keeping her babies safe...but on a beam?
ReplyDeleteJane x
And they survived their 7-foot death leap to the ground!
DeleteYes those old girls will surprise you every time. I guess it's till in their genes to put their nest in a very safe place.
ReplyDeleteNow how could you ever turn down these little cuties?
I could not! :)
DeleteIf I need a chicken???? Of course I do, but I am afraid you won't give it to me.
ReplyDeleteVery cute surprise.
And, by the way, do you know that chickens are the only animal you eat before
they are born and after they are dead.
You are not eating my chickens, Mr. Bad Man.
DeleteAren't they just the sweetest things?
ReplyDeleteMy heart was in my mouth when you said you put them all in a bucket!!!!
I have scooped chicks and ducklings into a bucket more than once! You get them all in there and then Mama follows behind you as you move the babies to wherever they're going (new duck house, whatever!) :)
