Birds vs. cats: which are smarter? Discuss!

"Wow, man. Look at all this free seed! Right on!"*

(*This little chickadee is clearly a child of the 60s.)

"What the... who the hell are YOU?"

"I. Am. DEATH! DEATH!! You succulent little morsel! Come to me!!!"

"Er, Naomi, don't forget your handsome boyfriend. It's considered romantic to share the kill!"

"Are you still here, Fish-breath? Because I've figured out the window concept, and DUH, you're no threat!"

"I. Am. DEATH! DEATH!! DEATH!!!I will use my super-kitty powers to fly through this glass and DEVOUR YOU!"

"Blah blah, whatever. Are all cats this stupid?"

 Rhetorical question!

Here's a short video of the fun...

  2. Oh, my gosh, thanks for my laugh of the day! My two cats also stare out the back window (sliding doors) at all the birds and squirrels we feed. We call it 'kitty-cat television.'
They've caught the occasional slow bird outside, but no squirrels. In fact, I think Melody and Nutmeg see the squirrels as other pets in the family because the squirrels sometimes walk within inches of them and they don't pounce.

  3. As someone with two cockatiels, I have to say that birds are smarter.

    Kudos to that brazen chickadee!

  5. Jennifer, the kitties are trying! :)

Mom2fur, thanks for visiting and glad we could give you a laugh. Julius (orange fluffy guy not in video) has nailed several chipmunks. He is an indoor cat but our cats have an outdoor caged enclosure. Sometimes the chipmunks are stupid enough to run through it when Julius is in residence... ooops. He has gotten red squirrels too. Melody and Nutmeg may have hope! :)

  6. Ahab, I share your sentiment. The chickens are also currently looking brighter than the cats, who are of course brighter than the dogs...

The chickadees seem to be getting VERY used to the cats on the windowsill.

First time I've seen a bird tormenting a cat. Well done chickadee.

But I'd still say the bird is the more stupid one. Does it know that one day the window might be open?

Re my earlier comment, I suspect you may say that window is never open, but even if that's the case, the cat in the nearest dwelling might get a nice surprise by an open window one day when an over-confident chickadee pops down for a visit!

  10. There is no comparison of birds and cats.

Now, if you were to compare the intelligence of cats to Meyer lemon scones, however...

    :)

  11. H. Insciens, if it makes you feel better, we have screens on the windows in summer (that the cats have yet to penetrate) and the chickadees are only up there on the sill when there's birdseed to eat. :) Which there soon won't be!

And the cats may have coronaries from all the excitement...

  12. H. insciens, do you use window screens much across the pond? We need them to keep out the monstrous mosquitoes and blackflies!

Nope, no great use of windowscreens that I'm aware of, although on the west coast they might be an idea against the dreaded Scottish midgies, but for some reason these fearsome, but tiny, beaties don't really come indoors much. So anyway, it's closed window/open window. Two options. We are simple folks :)

    "beaties"? I meant beasties

  15. Some of your posts bring back so many memories that I go on, and on, and on...And after I think that I only needed to say how enjoyable your household is, in and out. Thank you for sharing your family of pets and their stories.

  16. Thanks for the laugh.
Bird or cat? This is a tough one. If both were outside, I'd go with the cats. But...let's face it. The birds are free to taunt the poor kitties as they obviously can sense they are unable to give in to their natural instinct. So, I guess the bird is right: It's fish for the kitties and not birdies!

  17. Recent ep of Nova about animal intelligence that was very interesting. It included a profile of Alex the parrot (Google that phrase if you never heard of him).

OMG this made me laugh out loud!!! By the way, I made the lemon scones last night -- used a little whole wheat and some buckwheat flour too. De-licious!

  19. Claude, I LOVE your stories. Please do go on and on. Or if you want, you can just email your stories to me. :) I find that absolutely fascinating, I really do!!!

  20. I am inclined to agree with you Elisabeth. :)

Cog Dis, I am glad you tried them. I like adding wholewheat flour to things and will try that next time. Those Cosmic Cookies I posted about in January had spelt flour. Yum!

    H. i., I asked because I have vague memories of visiting English and Scottish relatives being amazed by our window screens. Don't worry too much about the cats. They spent most of the summer out on the screened porch being tormented by birds, and have never sliced open the screen. THey only go outside in their palace, aka "The Cage", and so only have the opportunity to kill creatures stupid enough to enter (chipmunks and red squirrels.) Well, I say "they" but it's only Julius who commits homicide out there...
