You are what you eat....

Last night, we had GIANT PUFFBALL for dinner! If you haven't read yesterday's post, I found a giant puffball in the woods yesterday. Thanks to my friend Ronna, I knew it was edible! And apparently we are leading parallel lives again, although without her, I wouldn't even have touched the fungal soccer ball I found in the forest, never mind devoured it!

Ronna shared a recipe for Puffball Schnitzel, which I whipped up for dinner last night.

Ready to start!

Some nice Reggiano!

Peeling the puffball (very easy!)

Perfectly peeled, radiantly white!

A little thyme to mix in with the breadcrumbs.

Fresh crumbs in the processor.

First I dunked puffball slices in egg, then in the breadcrumbs.

VoilĂ ! Puffball schnitzel! Lots of leftovers and I still have half a giant puffball in my fridge. Gordon and both gave it two thumbs up. It amazes me that I found last night's supper in the forest (and the eggs were from our hens!)

If you are what you eat, then I'm a giant puffball!

  1. My dad use to go on an on about puffball. He lived in Fergus in his teens an they grew around the farm there. I've never actually seen one until now - neat!

  6. How cool that you *found* your food and then used your own eggs. I love mushrooms, so I bed I'd love this too. I've never heard of puffballs before.

  7. Yes, John, a giant mushroom! Apparently you have edible puffballs in the UK, too, but I'm not sure if you get the giant version or not. It was very tasty!

  8. Wandering Cat, those who love puffballs love them a lot! :) And I love Fergus too!

Sugarcreek, it did taste like an earthy mushroom. I thought the texture was a bit reminiscent of tofu.

Callie, I love your blog. Glad you like our chicken names.

Genny, I think puffballs turn up down in your parts, too. Did you see my friend Ronna's blog? She's got TWELVE growing right next to her house!

  11. Nance, it tasted like a velvety, earthy mushroom. I found the taste fairly delicate, and the texture was was softer and smoother than, say, that of a button mushroom!
